Why join GAU? We are the only organization that legally represents the 4100 graduate teaching and research assistants at the University of Florida. GAU works for health benefits, better working conditions, higher salaries, and to make UF a better place to teach and research.

• Representation: Officers for GAU regularly discuss matters important to all graduate students with UF administration, and GAU-funded representatives work with Florida government to make sure GA's interests are considered by the Legislature.
• Voice: The national and state media come to GAU and our members when they want to know about issues affecting the academic sector.  We have recieved national attention for our work on international student rights, graduate health benefits, and our struggle to keep our union alive against attacks from the state legislature.
• Social events: GAU regularly hosts social events at local clubs and the homes of members. You can meet other GA's with similar professional and recreational interests -- and have a good time, too.
• Interdisciplinary Activity:  GAU is likely the only place where you will meet scholars from across the dozens of departments and programs on campus.  It is a great place to share research, teaching, and other ideas with your colleagues.
• Legal Representation and Protection:  Most Chairs and Graduate Coordinators want the best for us, but bad things can and do happen at such a large institution.  Should you get into a dispute with your supervisor, chair, or dean, GAU membership affords you certain legal representation, at no cost to you.  Often times, just knowing that you are a GAU member will dissuade your department from mistreating you.

YOU CAN JOIN TODAY!

Joining GAU is easy. You can either fill out the form on the web and then print and sign it, or you can download a blank paper form and fill it out. You do need to print out and mail in a form because a legal signature is required. If you have any questions about the form or GAU in general, you can contact your departmental steward, or call the GAU office at 392-0274.  You MUST provide either your SSN or UF Student ID.
