For over 25 years, Graduate Assistants United, the employee union that
represents all TAs and RAs on campus, has argued with the university's
administration that graduate employees deserve fully-subsidized,
comprehensive health care. This past summer, the administration finally
responded by asking for GAU's input in developing a healthcare plan for
GA's. The outcome, a $400 subsidy that can be used toward the
university's student health plan with Scarborough Insurance, falls far
short of our insistence on comprehensive coverage designed to address
the specific needs of GA's rather than undergraduates.
GAU thinks that graduate employees at UF deserve health benefits
that
are equal or similar to those at our peer institutions. For example, at
the University of Michigan, the graduate employee union there, GEO, has
fought for and won comprehensive
healthcare with no premiums for graduate
employees to pay.
We've created this survey as the first step in pushing for more
comprehensive coverage. In order to renegotiate a better health
benefit for next year's contract, GAU needs to get a sense of what your
needs and desires concerning health care really are. We also need your
help. If you can volunteer even a couple of hours of your time to the
campaign for better healthcare for GA's contact GAU at: 392-0274 or
