- Release Time Workers:
WHAT DO THEY DO?
- The Co-Presidents oversee the general business of the union, preside at meetings, and supervise graduate assistants who have been released from duties under our contract to do the work of the union.
- The Organizing Chair or Co-Chairs are responsible for ensuring that activists are engaging their colleagues in membership and becoming part of the Organizing Committee.
- The Chief Steward ensures that Stewards are conveying vital information between the union and their departmental colleagues.
- The Chair of the Bargaining Committee is generally responsible for coordinating the research, training, and actual negotiations that bring us a good contract with the University Board of Trustees.
- The Treasurer retains fiduciary responsibility and oversight over the financial affairs of the union.
- The Coordinator is responsible for recording and archiving all the records of meetings of the Executive Committee and General Membership.
- The International Issues Chair, a recent addition, oversees our advocacy program and affiliate relations with international grad workers and international student groups.
- The Vice-President of the GAU Bargaining Council represents the three Florida GAU Chapters (UF, USF, and FAMU) at Executive Board meetings of the United Faculty of Florida, our umbrella organization.
- The Release-Time workers and Paid Staff (if any) are responsible for carrying out the orders of the Co-Presidents. They attend to duties related to managing the Collective Bargaining Agreement. Paid staff may also be involved in membership organizing. GAU does NOT use any dues money to fund political campaigns, support special causes, or contribute to parties or politicians. Some of our volunteers do lobby at the statehouse in Tallahassee for graduate interests.
