GAU executive meeting: 1/09/02
Those present:
Candi Churchill, Erika Gubrium, Tim Palmer, Craig Boylstein
Frank Goeddeke, Chris Tweddle, Craig Rinne, Maria Martinez
Call to order 6:05 pm.
1.) Q&A Session this February?
CHurchill and Tweddle discuss Spring 2002 GAU scheduled events. After 5-10 minute discussion, event schedule is written on board by Chris Tweddle as such:
1/28/02: GAU General Membership Meeting
2/04/02: GAU executive committee meeting
2/11/02: Cental Labor Council meeting
3/11/02: Executive Committee Meeting
3/19/02: GAU General Membership Meeting/Elections
(election notice is to be sent 2 weeks prior to 3/19 meeting)
4/01/02: executive committee meeting
4/05-4/07/02: AGEL
4/08/02: Central Labor Council meeting
Once these dates were outlined a discussion regarding question and answer session began to ensue. For 1/28/02 General Membership Meeting the plan is to begin at 6:30pm with pizza and sodas and begin the meeting, chaired by GAU co-president Craig Boylstein, at 7:00 p.m. The half-hour prior to the meeting executive members will be present to answer any union issues the general membership may have.
(Note: Room intended for this 1/28 meeting not available until 7:30. The issue will be resolved by 1/18/02. Announcement will then be mailed to all GAU members via campus mail.)
Goeddeke and Rinne stated that a question and answer session would be a good idea prior to 2nd general membership meeting in which elections will be held, and prior to the health care rally.
After 10-15 minute discussion, it was decided that a Q&A session will be held on 2/19/02 at 5pm. A room must be reserved for this event.
Goeddeke: Health Care Rally - perhaps each release timer (Rinne, Martinez, Boylstein) can call a random list of 20 names during office hours to notify members of the rally and encourage them to attend.
Blood pressure/cholesterol screening co-located with rally - generally agreed this would be a great idea if it could be accomplished.
Health care rally theme - "Spring Fever" as suggested by a GAU member. Labor Party Universal Health Care Petitions can also be distributed during the rally.
The goal is to make each proceeding health care rally bigger than its predecessor.
Health Care Rally scheduled for 4/01/02 from 11AM to 2Pm at La Plaza De Americas. Administration officials will be invited to attend; local press notified; health-related prizes will be raffled off.
Physiology dept. requires GAs to have health care to work in labs, as do other medical specializations. Rinne: (Perhaps GAU should check the writing of insurance requirements for UF GAS such as physiology)
Churchill then mentions institutional research she has started regarding GA health care in the United States. She used 1999 data on health care. Churchill gives Goeddeke what she has gathered thus far. Churchill plans to call union representatives and graduate schools at UF peer institutions (AAU)
Goeddeke would like thorough data (how much university pays; how much individual pays) on:
13 peer inst.
12 sub-peer institutions
Churchill: AFT sent Health Care booklet and disk.
The invitations to last semester's end of the semester social at The Top: Some campus addresses were incorrect: Botany; some in math; business
Goeddeke and Rinne set meeting with Dr. Ken Gerhardt to discuss this issue and mention it is grievable. Graduate school is to give GAU updated mailing list for GAs.
(Note: Morning of 1/14/02 Rinne and Goeddeke met with Dr. Gerhardt and discussed GA campus mailing address issue. Two schools (Business Admin./Medical Sciences) have decentralized their P.O. Box - main reason for incorrect mailings. Also, there seems to be a default address that gets attached to certain GAs for some as yet known reason.)
Membership cards - Have they been sent out to new members? Release time needs to check and if not, send out materials.
Rinne: Updating website; also plans to help set up new listserve formats.
Does GAU need a scanner?
Goeddeke: Standardized reports: Bilaws for financial reports are vague regarding the format and standards of the report. Each Chair + secretary and treasurer should create a template/standardized format for reports. Format can then be presented to general membership for dis/approval of standards.
Snags: Virus; adult material. What's up? GAU computer scanned for viruses on 1/08/02.
New listserve protocol, once in place, should rectify most virus issues due to mailing limitations.
5,000 newsletters printed; only needed 3,300. - Newsletter met with various printing errors, etc. Next one expected to go much more smoothly.
Tweddle: Events recap. Spring social? $200 in budget for "mini"-social - Discuss Lake Walhberg - will be cool there until late March; somewhat far from campus.
Mini-social decided to be at Alley Catz or Palm Lanes; set aside 8 or so lanes - Tweddle will check for dates and times this can be accomplished (planned for sometime in February).
(Note: Some of the above is not in chronological order of actual occurrence. Sorry - ed.)
7:15 pm. General agreement to adjourn.
