Grievance Process

  1. After submitting the grievance form, you will be contacted by a member of the Grievance Committee within 48 hours to go over all the details of your situation.
  2. If it is determined your issue may constitute a violation of the CBA, you will be meet in person with a member of the Committee to consider your options and discuss potential remedies.
  3. Before filing a formal grievance, you and a GAU representative will seek an informal resolution to your situation, such as a meeting with the involved parties to receive clarification or additional information. Oftentimes, issues are resolved at this stage.
  4. If an informal resolution is not reached, GAU members have the option of pursuing the matter further by requesting a formal grievance be filed by GAU to HR. Please note that a formal grievance must be filed within 25 days of the initial incident.
  5. Within 10 days of filing, there will be a Step 1 Hearing. At the hearing, you and the GAU representative present the grievance and provide any supporting documentation. This is the chance to tell your story and ask for a formal resolution.
  6. Within 10 days of the Step 1 Meeting, UF hears from the other side of the grievance and then issues their report. This report details the grievance and the decision that UF has made. If you are satisfied with the decision, this concludes the grievance process!
  7. If the Step 1 decision is not acceptable, we have an additional 10 days to file for a Step 2 Hearing. This is essentially the same process as Step 1, except the grievance is presented to different UF administrators and we have the chance to address issues with the first report.
  8. Within 10 days, a second report will be issued. As before, this report details the grievance to date and the decision that UF has made. Again, if you are satisfied with this decision, you can conclude the grievance process at this stage!
  9. If the decision is not acceptable, we have an additional 25 days to file for arbitration. Then within 14 days of filing, arbitration will begin. With arbitration, an outside mediator will hear both sides of the grievance and make a decision. Arbitration must be completed within 90 days. Whatever decision the arbitrator makes is the final decision for the grievance.
